An Iroquois County man who was shot by deputies Wednesday is facing assault charges when he is released from the hospital.A news release from the Iroquois County sheriff’s office stated deputies were called to a home on the 200 block of Chestnut Street in Onarga Wednesday evening for a report of a 29-year-old man inside the home “needing a psychological evaluation.”Deputies arrived at the home and found the man on the roof, armed with a knife and damaging windows and other parts of the home. Deputies coaxed the man down from the roof and back inside the home.Once inside, deputies attempted to further de-escalate the situation, but the man charged at deputies with the knife and one deputy opened fire, striking the man.Deputies summoned paramedics and provided aid to the man before he was transported to Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee for treatment. The man is expected to be charged with aggravated assault once he is released from the hospital, authorities said.
